Step 1: Fly to Guatemala City

La Aurora International Airport (GUA)

Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport (GUA) is the main gateway. Direct flights are available from major US cities including Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, as well as from Mexico City and other Latin American hubs.

Step 2: Guatemala City to Panajachel

2.5–3 hours by road

The journey from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlán takes you through scenic highlands and traditional Mayan villages. We recommend booking your transport in advance.

Important Note

Shuttles typically drop off in Panajachel. From there, you'll take a boat to Tzununá. Contact us at least 24 hours before arrival so we can coordinate your final transfer.

Step 3: Boat to Tzununá

The scenic final leg across Lake Atitlán

From Panajachel's public dock, you'll take a lancha (boat) to Tzununá. The ride offers stunning views of the lake's three volcanoes.

  • Multiple departures per day

Private Boat

  • On-demand, flexible timing
  • Direct to Tzununá dock

From Tzununá Dock to Loma

Once you arrive at Tzununá's public dock, it's a short uphill journey to our sanctuary:

  • Tuk-tuk: 5–10 minutes, Q20–30 (≈ $3–4 USD)
  • 4x4 Pickup: We can arrange pickup if needed
  • Walking: 20–25 minutes uphill (not recommended with luggage)

Helpful Travel Tips

Best Times to Travel

  • Morning flights: Arrive in time for afternoon boat crossings
  • Last boat from Pana to Tzununá leaves at 7pm, so aim to arrive earlier when waters are calmer
  • Dry season: November–April for clearest roads and views
  • Verde Season: May–October brings clear mornings and dramatic afternoon storms

What to Pack

  • Light layers: Days are warm, evenings cool by the lake
  • Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen for boat rides
  • Rain jacket: In Verde Season (May–Oct) mornings are typically sunny, with rain arriving in the afternoon
  • Cash (Quetzales): For boats, tuk-tuks, and tips
  • Small bills: Q20, Q50, Q100 notes are most useful

Visa & Entry Requirements

  • US, Canada, EU: No visa required for stays up to 90 days
  • Passport validity: Must be valid for 6 months beyond entry
  • Tourist card: Free on arrival at GUA airport
