Accessibility

We welcome all guests with open hearts. Here's what you need to know about the physical realities of our hillside sanctuary

Our Heart and Our Reality

We welcome all people with genuine warmth and care. At the same time, we believe in being honest about the physical nature of our space so you can make informed decisions about your visit.

Loma de Atitlán is perched on a steep hillside overlooking Lake Atitlán. This sacred placement gives us breathtaking views and deep connection to the land—but it also means our property is not accessible for people with mobility limitations.

Physical Considerations

Our property includes:

  • Multiple flights of stairs between buildings and pathways
  • Steep hillside terrain with natural stone steps
  • No elevators or wheelchair-accessible routes
  • Uneven natural pathways through gardens
  • Steps required to access all guest rooms and common areas
  • Limited flat surfaces throughout the property

This means our sanctuary may not be suitable for:

  • Guests using wheelchairs or mobility devices
  • Guests with limited mobility or difficulty navigating stairs
  • Elderly guests who may find steep terrain challenging
  • Anyone recovering from injuries that affect movement

What We Can Offer

While we cannot change the hillside nature of our property, we do our best to support all guests within these physical realities:

  • We welcome service animals
  • Our staff can assist with carrying luggage up and down stairs
  • We can place guests in rooms that require fewer stairs when possible
  • We move at a gentle pace and encourage rest throughout the day
  • We're happy to modify activities to match your energy and ability level
  • All dietary needs and preferences are warmly accommodated

If you have questions about whether our space might work for you, please reach out. We're happy to have an honest conversation about what to expect.

Website Accessibility

We strive to ensure our website meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and includes:

  • Keyboard navigation support for all interactive elements
  • Alternative text for images
  • Clear and consistent navigation structure
  • Sufficient color contrast for readability
  • Resizable text without loss of functionality
  • Screen reader compatibility
  • Descriptive link text and headings
  • Forms with clear labels and error messages

Supporting Different Needs

While our physical space has limitations, we warmly welcome guests with sensory sensitivities, neurodivergence, and other non-mobility-related considerations:

  • Quiet, nature-surrounded rooms away from high-traffic areas
  • Flexible meal timing and options for different dietary needs
  • Optional participation in group activities—rest is always honored
  • Written communication available for all information and requests
  • Gentle, low-sensory environment throughout the property
  • Staff trained in trauma-informed, respectful communication

Let us know how we can best support your comfort and well-being during your stay.

Our Approach to Inclusion

We believe in radical honesty paired with genuine welcome. While we cannot change the steep hillside terrain of our property, we can—and do—create a culture of warmth, flexibility, and care for all who can physically access our space.

We're always learning and listening. If you have specific needs or questions about whether Loma might work for you, please reach out. We'd rather have an honest conversation before you book than have you arrive to unpleasant surprises.
